The Delta State Government has once again reiterated its ban on graduation parties and elaborate end-of-session ceremonies in private schools across the state. According to the directive, schools found violating this policy may face sanctions. The move is primarily aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and refocusing educational institutions on their core mandate — delivering quality education.
Understanding the Government’s Decision
In recent years, graduation ceremonies in many private schools have evolved into extravagant events involving heavy spending on decorations, gifts, parties, and elaborate outfits. While these celebrations are intended to honor students’ achievements, they often place significant pressure on parents, many of whom are already struggling with school fees and daily living expenses.
The government’s position seeks to promote prudence, equity, and a return to the basics of education. This policy has received mixed reactions: many parents have welcomed it as a much-needed relief, while others argue that modest celebrations play an important role in motivating children and marking important milestones.
Hosanna David Foundation’s Stand
At the Hosanna David Foundation (HDF), we commend the Delta State Government for taking a bold step toward protecting families from unnecessary financial strain. Education should not be a gateway to debt or competitive display. We believe resources should be channeled toward improving learning outcomes rather than ostentatious events.
However, we also recognize the emotional and psychological value of celebrating children’s hard work. Milestones deserve recognition. Completely eliminating celebrations may inadvertently reduce motivation among young learners.
Our Recommendation:
- Schools should adopt simple, low-cost, and dignified alternatives such as:
- Brief award presentations during school assemblies
- Certificate ceremonies with parents in attendance
- Faith-based thanksgiving services
- Recognition programs focused on academic excellence and good character
The Hosanna David Foundation remains committed to supporting initiatives that make quality education accessible and meaningful for every child in Delta State and beyond. We are open to partnering with schools, parents, and the government to develop sustainable models for celebrating academic achievements responsibly.
What Do You Think?
We invite parents, educators, school owners, and concerned citizens to share their thoughts. Should the ban remain absolute, or can schools be allowed to organize modest, budget-friendly celebrations?
